'Bertram' Bertrand Trefzger
born 11/27/1844, immigrated 1852, died 1919

Bertram was born on November 27, 1844 in the little town of Wehr, Baden.

He immigrated to the U.S.A. with his family when he was 7 years old. His father Martin and their family settled in Frailey township in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania. The Post Office was Donaldson, PA.

In 1864 both Anthony (17 years old), and Bertram (19 years old) served in the Civil War. They were in the F-184th Pennsylvania. They were discharged in 1865. They are both found in the Civil War Pension Index.

Bertram married Elizabeth Annie Reed. They had one daughter Ida in 1866.

"Thomas Gehres of Branch Township, age 25 & Ida Trefsgar of Frailey Township, age abt. 20, with the consent of Bertram Trefsgar, father, married Dec.30,1886 at Tremont by Daniel Sannes. Liscense #1270." from Schuylkill County Archives.*

"Bertram Trefzger died January 22, 1919 In Frailey Twp., Sch. Co. most likely Donaldson, PA. Death Certifiate # 9342, he did not die in Columbia, Lancaster Co."**

Census Information:
In 1860 Bertram 16, was living at home with his parents.
By 1870 Bertram, a coal miner, had married Elizabeth and they had a 4 year old daughter Ida.
The 1880 census also lists Bertram. Elizabeth, and Ida.
In the 1890 census Bertram's father 76 and his brother Martin 26 are living with Bertram and Lizzie.
The 1900 census lists Bertram, wife Ann E. and Bertram Garis, 8 years old, a grandson. We assume Ann E and Elizabeth Ann are the same person. We also assume Bertram Garis is Ida's son.
In the same census a few pages back there is an Ida Garis married to Thomas Garis. They have 7 children, 6 of them living with them: Fronie E. 11, Alvina Z. 10, Earl J. 6, Reno A. 2. and Lutie M. 9 months.
We assume this Ida is Bertram's daughter.
In the 1910 census Bertram, Anne E. and Bertram T Gehres are still living together in Frailey, Schuylkill, PA.
In 1910 Ida's family is found as Gehres in the census.
In 1910 Bertram Trefsger and Ann are living at 51 Philadelphia Street in Donaldson. Bertram was a janitor at the school.
"The name Gehres is still pretty popular in the Tremont/Donaldson area. When I was growing up, the Chief of Police in Tremont was Lamar Gehres. Not sure how he is related but I would bet that he is connected somewhere!" *

In the 1890 census page Bertram's father Martin (76) and his brother Martin VanBuren (26) are listed with Bertram and his wife Lizzie.**
