Mary Elizabeth Metz
1843-1927

Mary, born in 1843, on the Metz Farm, was the 3rd of 4 children born to Jacob and Josepha Metz. On 7/10/1849 when Mary was less than 6 years old her mother Josepha died during a cholera epidemic. Mary had 2 older brothers and a baby sister. The family continued to live on the Metz farm. As Mary was growing up she felt responsible for maintaining the household and being the woman of the house as best she could.

In 1865 when she was 21 ½ years old she married John Berger.

In 1886 Mary's father Jacob Metz was invited and moved in with the family. He lived on Berger Hill until he died in the summer of 1893.

When John died in 1894 Mary had Nauni (John's older half sister), and 6 children at home. She also had 18 1/2 additional acres they had just purchased to maintain.

The next year (in 1895) the children's marriage's started. In the fall of 1895 Amanda married John Eckerle. In the fall of 1897 George married Nellie Trefzger. In the fall of 1899 Ottilia (called 'Tillie') married Fred Trefzger. In June 1905 Teresa married Jack Sheblessy.

After Teresa married Jack, Mary had only Anna and Joseph left at home on Berger Hill. Joseph married in 1920.

Mary died on Berger Hill in 1927 when she was 83 years old. Mary is buried in St. John's Cemetery, St. Bernard, OH.
